A Kickstarter Physical Pledge Tier for $1?!
SKATE Directive launches Friday, Nov 1
One day, Steve (writer of SKATE DIRECTIVE) called me with an epiphany on how to write the origin of a critical main character, and he wanted to put that story in SKATE DIRECTIVE. He told me his vision and to be blunt, I was blown away. I loved it. It was short, and in just a few pages he crafted an emotional and impactful origin. It showcased the character’s military background that shaped them into the leader they later came to be.
That character, Victor Edge, is the lynchpin of Steve’s early stories.
As I discussed variant cover ideas with my brother Steve for SKATE DIRECTIVE, I wanted to provide some truly unique covers on this book. I’m always looking for ways to be innovative.
Steve’s origin idea led to an idea of my own.
Our father was in the Army, and our grandfather was career Army. I noticed how all of the Armed Forces were extremely important in the development of many of Steve’s original characters.
The US Marines, for instance, for characters like Victor Edge and Skate.
I loved the origin of Victor Edge so much, I felt that it could be its own variant cover for the book—something of a nod to the military roots of the character. So we put that idea into motion. But that direction pivoted again when we saw the progression of Jimbo Salgado’s work, followed by Ansori’s stunning colors.
As much as I love comics (which is a lot!), this artwork transcends comics.
It became something even bigger. An original art piece that is a salute to the men and women of the Armed Forces. Something that is much more than a comic book cover, it’s a work of art that honors the military.
Enter the $1 Kickstarter Physical Item Tier.
Our freedom is crucially important to us, and great art should be shown.
I wanted to give everyone a chance to get this original art as an art print, both comic fan and non-comic fan alike. So we decided to make it available as a virgin 8x10 Art Print on the $1 pledge tier for the upcoming Kickstarter.
To all the men and women of the Armed Forces, THANK YOU for your service!
SKATE DIRECTIVE launches on Nov 1. Hope to see you there!
All my best,
Mark
